Hurrah for Butcher’s Row for their great display of bunting ahead of the festivities on 1 May! Now for the rest of the village?
All were in fine voice on Monday evening helped along by some excellent mulled cider and delicious mince pies. A sum of £105 was raised for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, so many thanks to all who contributed and to Diane Crawford and Linda Chambers for organising the event again this year. And, of course, to Ann Wright for the use of her facilities!

The traditional Rosedale winter charity auction was held at the White Horse Farm Inn on Saturday evening, 15 November 2104. A very good crowd attended and the selling of a huge variety of local produce and other items was conducted briskly and with customary efficiency by the Seller family, aided and abetted by members of the Updale Reading Committee.
The sale generated £900 of which half goes to the Updale Reading Room and the other £450 will be shared by two medical charities, Cancer Research and fundraising for a mobile heart monitor. An excellent result and thanks to all who donated so generously and to Christine for hosting the event again.
The Centenary of the outbreak of W.W.I was marked with a Remembrance Day service and laying of wreaths on behalf of the benefice and the community. The church was full of people from all five churches.

Both days of the Local Villages WW1 history exhibition were well attended at the Updale Reading Room, Rosedale. Between 50 to 60 people on Saturday and rather more on Sunday visited from all over the country, not just locally and viewed a fascinating and varied set of photographs, memorabilia and documentation on the roles played by by local people in the Great War both at home and at the front from Rosedale and Hartoft, Appleton le Moors, Sinnington, Lockton and Levisham and Thornton le Dale.
A tremendous amount of hard work was put in to stage the exhibition by volunteers from all the villages involved. The organisers would also like to thank all those who helped out on both days with running the reception desk, guiding and advising our visitors, those who provided and served all the delicious cakes, rolls and other refreshments that are such a feature of these events in the Updale Reading Room and, finally, the generous donors of excellent raffle prizes on both days – you know who you are so thanks again!
The History Society would like to thank Howard and Daphne Hebron for their continued generosity in hosting the RHS Coffee Morning this Saturday 7 June in the Coach House Inn.
Thanks also to Margaret Truran and Carol Cockerill for organising the raffle and to all who helped out and contributed towards raising £111.21 during an successful and enjoyable morning.
The Updale branch of the Women’s Institute celebrated its 75th anniversary on Monday evening in the Updale Reading Room with a special pie and pea supper.
Sue Proctor, the current Branch President, welcomed the guest of honour, Christine Field, the Chair of the Yorkshire Federation, four past presidents and 15 members to the special celebration of the founding of the Updale branch in March 1939.
A letter was received this morning from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance regarding the carols around the tree event on 21 December:
“Dear Friends,
On behalf of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Charity we would like to thank you for your generous donation of £76 given by carol singing around the tree in Rosedale Abbey.
It is the goodwill, sponsorship and charitable donations that keep this vital service flying and therefore we are extremely grateful for your support – without the generosity of people such as your selves we would be unable to continue this valuable work.

Well done again to everyone who attended and remember to bring all your friends and family to make next year’s event even bigger and better.
A good crowd of around forty people and at least eight dogs from Rosedale and Hartoft gathered around the village Christmas Tree on Saturday evening, 21 December, to enjoy mulled cider and mince pies and sing carols lustily until the rain cut short the festivities!
A very generous crowd donated £76 to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Thanks to Diane Crawford for arranging the excellent musical accompaniment and to Linda Chambers for the mulled cider and mince pies. Let’s make it an even bigger event next year. Meantime, a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year to all our readers in Rosedale, Hartoft and beyond!
Sadly, Walk 4 had to be cancelled at the last minute, but Walk 3, the History Walk, set off on Sunday afternoon with ten intrepid adventurers defying the weather forecast to walk to Thorgill via the ‘lost houses’ at Ratten Row and then climb up to the mine entrances at Sheriff’s Pit near Medd’s Farm.
There was some heavy rain, but thanks to good planning the group were visiting the old pit pony stables at Medd’s Farm at the time, so were able to take shelter and enjoy a welcome cup of tea kindly provided by Sue Atkinson, while waiting for the showers to pass by.
Thanks also to Paul Grantham, Assistant Ranger at the NYMNP for acting as back marker and to Jay Morrison, our local Ranger for arranging to have heavy bracken and rushes on part of the track up to the mines entrances cut back before the walk.
