David Ross Foundation Visit – 5 June 2018

David Ross and trustees of his foundation visited Rosedale on Tuesday 5 June 2018 to observe progress on the Land of Iron project, to which the Foundation has contributed £300,000. They were briefed in the Reading Room by Tom Mutton, the project manager, before heading out to East Mines on bicycles to see the work that has been done already and to meet volunteers on task on the line.

Just a reminder that the famous artist, Andy Goldsworthy, will be giving a talk on the art works he has been creating in Northdale, in the Updale Reading Room on Wednesday 13 June starting at 7.00pm

Race Night in The Coach House – 20 January 2018

Many thanks to all who supported the race night at the Coach House. We raised an amazing £523 for the Reading Room / village hall fund.
Thanks must go to Dave Oakey, Jimmy Porter and Sue Foster for arranging the evening, June Scarth for the raffle and Pam Seller for running the tote.
The Reading room has constant running repairs and needs updating on the heating system. THANK YOU for all your support.

Rosedale History Society Annual General Meeting – 3 December 2017

The annual general meeting of the Rosedale History Society will be held in the Updale Reading Room, Rosedale, at 4.45pm, immediately after the usual Tea and Chat meeting.

Annual Christmas Auction – 18 November 2017

The dale’s traditional pre-Christmas auction was held in the Coach House Inn  on Saturday 18 November 2017. Amongst much merriment and relaxing inhibitions, masterminded by Dave Seller as the auctioneer, assisted by Sue Foster and Ena Dent, with Lorraine Dale and Pam Seller keeping the money flowing in, the grand sum of £1430 was raised for good causes, including the Reading Room, Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Rosedale Community Fund.

As ever, huge thanks to Dave Oakey and the Coach House team, to those who donated auction lots so generously and to all who helped make it such a memorable evening.

Charity Auction – White Horse Farm Inn

The traditional Rosedale winter charity auction was held at the White Horse Farm Inn on Saturday evening, 15 November 2104. A very good crowd attended and the selling of a huge variety of local produce and other items was conducted briskly and with customary efficiency by the Seller family, aided and abetted by members of the Updale Reading Committee.

The sale generated £900 of which half goes to the Updale Reading Room and the other £450 will be shared by two medical charities, Cancer Research and fundraising for a mobile heart monitor. An excellent result and thanks to all who donated so generously and to Christine for hosting the event again.

WW1 History Exhibition – 13 to 14 September 2014

Both days of the Local Villages WW1 history exhibition were well attended at the Updale Reading Room, Rosedale. Between 50 to 60 people on Saturday and rather more on Sunday visited from all over the country, not just locally and viewed a fascinating and varied set of photographs, memorabilia and documentation on the roles played by by local people in the Great War both at home and at the front from Rosedale and Hartoft, Appleton le Moors, Sinnington, Lockton and Levisham and Thornton le Dale.

A tremendous amount of hard work was put in to stage the exhibition by volunteers from all the villages involved. The organisers would also like to thank all those who helped out on both days with running the reception desk, guiding and advising our visitors, those who provided and served all the delicious cakes, rolls and other refreshments that are such a feature of these events in the Updale Reading Room and, finally, the generous donors of excellent raffle prizes on both days – you know who you are so thanks again!

The Great War 1914 – 1918

On the eve of the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War on 4 August 1914, we should pause to remember those from Rosedale who gave their lives in that horrific conflict.

A number of local history societies, including Rosedale History Society, are staging a Great War exhibition at the NYM Railway station at Pickering for the next week, after which the Rosdale displays will be shown at Rosedale Show on 16 August.

Finally, there is a planned ‘Lights Out’ throughout the nation on Monday night, 4 August, between 10 and 11pm, when all public buildings will turn off all lights except one per building. Private householders are being encouraged to do the same, with perhaps just one candle or similar small light in a window during the dark hour.

History Society Gatecrasher Shock!

John Dent, our village caretaker, revealed an unexpected side of his character when he appeared at today’s meeting of the History Society’s tea and chat afternoon dressed as a tart!

John Dent in fancy dress – or perhaps not? Janet and Pat Dring seem tickled!

In fact, John, a History Society regular, was off to a charity sale of actual tarts at the White Horse Farm Inn in aid of blinded service personnel, a worthy cause and worth the odd ribald remark. Update: the tart auction made £350, an excellent result and thanks again to Christine and Jim at the White Horse.

The next tea and chat meeting of the Rosedale History Society will be on Sunday 4 August at the Updale Reading Room between 2pm and 4pm – all are most welcome. And the tarts will be delicious!
