Land of Iron – Bank Top Kilns Update as at 10 June 2019

As reported previously, work continues to stabilise the ironstone roasting kilns at Bank Top. The contractors are currently strengthening and re-inforcing the back wall to prevent further stone falls and are also re-pointing the interior of the arches top and bottom to stop water ingress.

The work is progressing well, although no completion date is yet known for the work as more problems become evident in the structure. Further updates will be posted here soon.

Rosedale FC v The NYM Gamekeepers FC

The annual charity football match between Rosedale FC and the NYM Gamekeepers team took place on Sunday 9 June on Rosedale’s infamous sloping pitch.

Gooooal!

The final score was believed to be around 8 – 2 in Rosedale’s favour, but it was a hard contested match and, more importantly, a friendly end of season run-out for both teams.

Rosedale Wedding Dress Festival 24 May – 2 June 2019

A big thank you to all who supported and took part in the Rosedale Wedding Dress Festival.  We raised £3,851 (and moved the Angel up a notch). That takes our total fund-raising to a grand £26,487. Our target is £90,000.

We can now show we mean business in grant applications to save Rosedale Church from closure.

Congratulations to the five raffle winners! And thank you to the local businesses who provided the prizes and supported the event.

Any ideas for the next fundraising event will be warmly welcomed. Until then, thank you again – your donations and positive feedback have been very much appreciated.

Best wishes

The preview evening for the Wedding Dress Festival in aid of the appeal for St Mary and St Lawrence Church in Rosedale Abbey was very well attended and over £655 was raised for the appeal fund.

Entry is free from 10.00am each day – donations to the appeal are, of course, very welcome!

Freddie’s Fight Fundraiser – Sunday 26 May 2019

Lyndsey says that if you feel too shy you don’t have to do the class at Rosedale Reading Room, but why not pop in for a coffee, buy some raffle tickets and watch the fun while supporting this great cause.

Aerial Survey – 14 May 2019

For those who may have wondered what all the helicopter activity was over Rosedale West on Tuesday 14 May – it was an Aerospatiale 350B aircraft belonging to the PDG Group based in Inverness who carry out surveys of power lines for the National Grid.

G-ORKY – nice registration. Perhaps President Putin is looking to invest in Rosedale?

Land of Iron Update – Bank Top Kilns

Work has started today, Monday 13 May, on conserving and stabilising the ironstone roasting kilns at Bank Top, Rosedale. Initially, the area around the kilns will be fenced off and scaffolding erected to allow William Birch Ltd to carry out much needed conservation work on these impressive monuments to Rosedale’s ironstone ‘Klondike’ which started here at West Mines in 1856.

A lot of work has been done under the project on the ironstone workings and railway line at East Mines (see previous LoI updates) so it is good to see that West Mines, also known as Low Works, are now getting the same treatment.

Access to the lower car park at Bank Top will be restricted during the period of works so visitors are encouraged to use the upper car park.

Work ongoing as at 17 May 2019
