Rosedale Dark Skies Walk – 16 February 2018

Hawfinches in Rosedale

Fantastic to see these secretive and increasingly rare birds here in Rosedale.  At least five hawfinches are in and around the churchyard feeding on yew berries.  The hawfinch is the largest of our finches with a top-heavy look due to a large bill and thick neck.  With this powerful bill the hawfinch is able to crack open cherry stones.  They also feed on seeds from hornbeam and yew.  Autumn 2017 saw an unusually large influx in to the UK as a result of a crop failure in Europe and there have been a number of sightings in North Yorkshire.  But how lucky we are to get some in Rosedale and it certainly could be a first record for some time.  With great appreciation to Craig and Helen at Abbey Stores for the tip-off  and the best view of these shy birds.  Updale Natural History Recorder

Race Night in The Coach House – 20 January 2018

Many thanks to all who supported the race night at the Coach House. We raised an amazing £523 for the Reading Room / village hall fund.
Thanks must go to Dave Oakey, Jimmy Porter and Sue Foster for arranging the evening, June Scarth for the raffle and Pam Seller for running the tote.
The Reading room has constant running repairs and needs updating on the heating system. THANK YOU for all your support.

Coffee Morning – Saturday 6 January 2018

The coffee morning held in the Coach House Inn on Saturday 6 January was in aid of the Rosedale Football Team funds.

Margaret, Carol and Janet getting ready for the raffle.

The raffle and coffee sales raised £260 to help with the costs of running the team and for the provision of balls, goal nets and other such items.

Thanks to all who contributed by donating prizes, buying tickets, those who helped out with the raffle and to Dave Oakey and the team at the Coach House for their hospitality.

Snow covered dale

Stunningly beautiful walk in the snow at dusk along the old railway line at Rosedale East.  The low mist adds to the atmospheric conditions as the light fades.  A pair of stonechats break the silence with their presence as do three wrens flitting together in the rushes  Updale Natural History Recorder

Carols On The Green – 20 December 2017

On a dank evening, over fifty people from the dale and visitors sang carols on the village green with varying degrees of lustiness, the volume increasing noticeably with the consumption of some excellent mulled cider and mince pies!

Oh, Come all Ye Faithful!

As a result, £270 was collected (including £50 from a whip round of the customers in Abbey Stores) for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, a very worthy cause as there were several visits to Rosedale by the distinctive yellow helicopters of the service in 2017.

Thanks to all who contributed so generously and to Adrian and Diane Crawford for again leading the singing so ably. The same again next year?

Changing Lightbulbs in Rosedale

What does it take to change a lightbulb? In Rosedale Abbey it was five men and three wagons to change the old sodium street light for a modern LED version, meaning better lit roads in the village this winter.

Land of Iron Public Consultation – 12 December 2017

A public consultation on the proposed conservation measures on Rosedale’s ironstone roasting kilns was held last night, 12 December, in the Coach House Inn. The session was very well attended by 28 local people and there was lively discussion on several topics after stimulating presentations by representatives from the project office and the archaeological and engineering agencies involved with the proposed works.

Tom Mutton, the TELI project manager outlines progress on the project.

Details of how to volunteer to help out in the programme of works on the line in 2018 can be found at www.northyorkmoors.org.uk/landofiron

Chimney Bank Closed – 8 December 2017

Chimney Bank has been closed until further notice because of a serious crash on the hill on Friday morning 8 December. The BATA feed lorry skidded on frozen snow and crashed just above the first hairpin on the hill, shedding its load of cattle feed.

The BATA lorry on the Bank

Fortunately the driver only suffered a broken ankle and was taken off to Scarborough Hospital.

In view of the conditions on the Bank and the forecasted very bad weather, the recovery crews told the police and Highways on site that it would be unsafe to attempt a recovery until the weather improves. So the Bank is closed until further notice – watch this space and our social media for further reports.
